Yesterday after Project Runway we watched a promo episode of the HBO show True Blood.
It's set in Louisiana, and focuses on the potential romance between a vampire — living openly for the first time, thanks to a synthetic blood drink (available at liquor stores!) called Tru:Blood — and a psychic waitress. There was also a murder.
It's a little ridiculous, but then, these days anything with vampires prettymuch has to be. Near Dark is the only modern vampire movie I can think of that gets away with being more-or-less earnest throughout.
(This is that vampire movie where no one says the word vampire.)
Most of you know that I played a vampire RPG in Germany (two actually), but I used to be really into vampire movies as well: for a while I had this crazy idea that I would watch every vampire movie ever made. I've seen dozens, but ultimately there are just too many out there.
After a while I was mainly interested in finding out the background mythology that the movie used, the infection vectors for vampirism, and what vulnerabilities the vampires had — it was not unenjoyable research.
These days I'm more into zombies, but it was nice to see some vampires again; I actually think I'll check out True Blood once it's out on DVD. I could've sworn that I'd seen it at the library already, but since the first season hasn't even started yet, that's looking increasingly unlikely, i.e. impossible.
