Superbad

I just got back from seeing Superbad with Jenna and Shelley. I'm still uncomfortable with this newfound obsession with awkwardness in film and television — I hate both Napoleon Dynamite and The Office — but I can forgive the moments of excess in Superbad. This was a good, funny movie.

McLovin is indeed everything he's cracked up to be.

I was especially impressed by the film's focus on friendship, an unusual choice. This was at its heart a movie about friendship: its variations, our roles as friends, how much we value friendship, where friendship splinters, and where it holds.

How does Superbad treat women?

Hah. Pretty well, actually, as far as the actual love interests go (on the friendship angle, we see the role of "wingwoman" a few times).

Among the secondary characters there are some less flattering portrayals -- both male and female -- but they all had a hint of truth to them.

I'll try to watch it in the next week. It will do me good to see Michael Cera's impeccable comic timing in action again.

Maybe you've seen this already, but hey, maybe not. For those of us needing a Michael Cera fix, http://www.clarkandmichael.com/ is a bunch of episodes he and a friend wrote, produced & posted online. The first two were good times and I hope to get around to watching the rest soon.
